HELP HELP HELP
Hi everyone,
Please let me blunt: We need leaders.
We need leaders at all levels (beavers, cubs, scouts). If you have some time to volunteer and would like to be an official Scouts Canada leader please communicate with our group commissioner: Jeff Moore at : (613) 673-2568. For his email please see our contact-us page.
The number of leaders directly affects the number of youth we can accept in each section. I can never remember what the ratio is but for the sake of example let's say that it is: one leader for every 5 youth. This means that for example if we have only 2 cub leaders, we can only accept 10 cubs. Make sense ?
Now, I'm not trying to scare anyone and I know some of you would like to give it a try but are afraid to commit. Or maybe you're a bit too shy. Don't worry I've been there. Let me share some thoughts : When I signed up my son for beavers 4 years ago, I offered to help out. Someone asked if I wanted to be a leader and I remember saying "Sure why not".
After getting a Policy Record Check (PRC), I got my scouting shirt, my necker and was officially welcomed. It took me a while to get the hand of things as I had NO scouting experience at all. I quickly realized how much there is a sense of camaraderie and belonging in the organization (in Rockland anyways ... I can't speak for other groups).
It's been 4 years now and I've moved up to Cubs with my son. Next year will be my last year as a cub leader and who knows, I might move up to Scouts.
On average it requires from 1 hour to 2 hours per week. Now I can see some senior leaders snickering ... "Ha only 2 hours ?". The fact is some weeks you might spend more than 2 hours while other weeks you'll spend less than an hour. We all work as a team and nobody is left to do it all (unless they want to .. ha ha) . It may require you to make calls to parents, prepare a schedule, get snacks for an up-coming camp.
You will have to take a quick seminar on how Scouts Canada works, how to fill out the paper work, etc... It's quite painless it is given in Rockland by a member of our group and if you're a newbie like I was, it is useful.
Although it does require some of your time and effort, the benefits are tremendous. You get to spend some quality time with your child(ren), you get to learn new things, you make friends and help out in the community.
