Cubs - 1st Hike

We had our 1st hike last Sunday at Petrie Island. I think it went really well. We had a mix of new and returning cubs for a total of about 12 I think.

Scouter Chill brought books on trees, mushrooms and birds for the cubs to look at. The weather was really wet but that did not stop us. Cubs saw various mushrooms ( turkey tail is a type that comes to mind ), trees and birds. They learned the importance of body heat and staying dry. We emphasized the importance of a hiking buddy.

This gave us leaders a quick glance at the behaviour of our pack. Even though we were missing about 4 or 5 cubs, all-in-all, they behaved quite good. There was almost no complaining (despite the weather), they pretty much listened to our rules (despite the strong temptations of river beds and small ponds). We know that our pack can work together so we're optimistic for our future outings. It also gave us an idea of sixer and seconder candidates.

Here are a couple of pics :

Cubs - Our 1st Meeting

Last night was our 1st Cub meeting. I definitely enjoyed myself and I think the kids did too (new and returning cubs alike).

I'll have to get used to the 1.5 hour meeting but that's okay. No snacks though, that's tough. ha ha.

We learned about the Cub promise, law and motto. Learned about badge work. Played some games (red light-green light, freeze tag I think and dodge ball). We also played a get to know you game where we all took turns saying our name and stating our favourite summer activity.

Our Akela gave every child a bag-o-surprises at the end. Each bag contained an item that had a special meaning:

  • Eraser: everyone makes mistakes
  • Gem: we are all valuable in our own way
  • Chewing Gum: We all stick together
  • Smarties: there are many different kinds of smart.
  • Sticker star: we all get a chance to shine by doing our best
  • Heart star: we are all part of a caring and safe group
Very cool. Thanks Akela.

Chil talked about the rules of the pack/jungle, what to do when someone calls "PACK" and "PACK, PACK, PACK" and a bunch of other important stuff.

We're having our 1st hike at Petrie Island this weekend. We'll be looking up all different types of fungus (or is it fungi ??) ( ie: mushrooms) and looking them up in various books. Sounds like badge work to me ... ;o) Hopefully, I'll remember to bring my camera and I'll take a few pictures.
